When you make something you put so much of yourself into it that when you finish that project, or should I say when you finally say goodbye (because really when are you ever done?!) a little bit of you leaves with it. It’s like breaking up with someone, you have an empty feeling – generally in direct proportion to the size and length of the relationship. Big deal – huge hole. Short time – pin prick. But it still hurts.

You always come away with something though, but in exchange it takes something from you. You lose your best bra, but gain a new bed shirt. When you’re feeling shit you always ask yourself – what was the point of that? Why did I put my heart and soul into something for it only to end? And to feel crap? The answer is because it felt good at the time. And you come out the other side. Knackered but stronger… and smarter.

That’s what I have to tell myself every time I make a short film.

That feeling of self confidence mixed with worthlessness. A dull sense of ‘I’m meant to be more than I am’. The constant heartbeat of your ambition and the ever present feeling that someone’s going to call you out… today, tomorrow, next week.

The black cloud above your head or stomach-walking-anger that comes with every day you don’t create something. My mum calls it the Collywobbles.

But most of all it’s that fear of knowing that you can’t do anything else, mixed with the fear of not knowing where your next idea is going to come from. Or if it’s going to be good.

Creativity is about hardship. If you’re happy you have nothing to say … that’s not to say you can’t create things that don’t have a happy ending. Cos even if you’re unhappy you can do that. Except Australian film makers. They can’t. Or the government just won’t give funding to those who can.

I haven’t blogged for ages. Maybe because I’ve been traveling for three months straight, launching my first feature film and producing content for other blogs. I’ve got so much to say. Loads to talk about… places to recommend, fashion trends to comment on – quotes to share. But it’s been so hard to make the jump back. What do you start back with? How do you re-enter the scene. It’s not about people who read it – because I have no idea who that is. It’s about making it make sense for yourself. And the reason I had to post something was because …

No matter how old you get your brother’s still an asshole. I’m 26 and I just bit my 21 one yr old, 6 ft, built like a brick shit house brother because he kicked me out of my old art studio (which he’s now taken over – still with all my art stuff in it). All I wanted to fix this pastel galaxy I’ve been experimenting with. I’ve only been gone a year. Turd burger. Up yours Davo. This means war.

It’s my Bro’s 21st tomorrow night and I’m thinking about a finger wave. No, not what those weird old men do to you in pubs, a proper 1920′s finger wave. The theme is flappers and gangsters (how surprising – seems to be everyone’s fave these days). So I’m thinking a cross between Ange & Drew. But in my research I came upon an old fave. The Great Gatsby. Oh Robert Redford. I wasn’t even alive when you looked this young.

I can’t believe I haven’t seen this before. This is exactly what school was like for me. I was in rotation too. Nothing like the continuous mutany of teenage girls. And it’s so 90′s! Ha. It amazes me that people continue to unite against one another. It just goes in circles. Everything about this rings a bell, and would with most girls.

It’s the insight that makes it work – and it’s what a lot of films lack these days. The simplicity of how it just is paints a picture about so much more than the story. Sofia Coppola just nails girls. In all her films, from the Virgin Suicides to her Miss Dior Cherie spot. Can’t wait to see what she does with Somewhere.

My housemates a bit over work at the moment. You have good days, and bad ones. But today wasn’t such a bad day overall because she came home with her eye on two pairs of shoes, a top and a hat.
